13th November - GTI British Championships
Two martial arts families from Truro Tae Kwon-Do Academy travelled to the recent GTI Tae Kwon-Do British Championships in Cheltenham, bringing home a number of medals and trophies.
The students competed in both modern free sparring and traditional Tae Kwon-Do routines known as patterns and with some 300 competitors, the divisions were hotly contested. Brother and sister Ned and Myrth Floyd won their respective divisions and both returned to Cornwall as British Tae Kwon-Do Champions, a great achievement in their first major tournament.
Their instructor, Liam Broderick is extremely pleased stating, 'it can be very daunting to take part in such a large tournament but my students showed great courage, performing extremely well and I'm very proud of them all. It was great to have these two families amongst the students from Cornwall and it highlights that Tae Kwon-Do is a family-oriented martial art that is open to all ages and abilities.'

4th November - Kickathon for BBC Children in Need
Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do martial artists have raised more than £700 for BBC Children in Need in their 'Kickathon for Pudsey'. The goal of this fundraising event was to raise £500 by performing 500 kicks in one hour. All that took part managed to exceed this target, reaching 750 with many of the students continuing on to perform 1,000 kicks, a superb achievement!
Senior Instructor Liam Broderick who organised this event commented, 'Tae Kwon-Do is famed throughout the world for its wide range of dynamic kicks, including jumping, flying, spinning and reverse kicks, all of which were performed during our Kickathon for Pudsey. Part of the Tae Kwon-Do ethos is to give something back to your community, and Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do has a long history of supporting BBC Children in Need, a charity that gives every penny that we donate to those UK children that so desperately need it. I'm proud and honoured that my students performed so well and raised so much money and I cannot thank them enough. And they're now super-fit for next weeks British Championships!'

30th October - GTI Umpire and Referee Course, Truro
With the London 2012 Olympics just around the corner, some of Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do's black belt experts have been training to become competition Umpires and Referees. Tae Kwon-Do, the Korean Art of Self-Defence was first introduced as an Olympic sport in Seoul in 1988, becoming a permanent part of the Olympics from Sydney, 2000. This dynamic martial art is famed for its rapid high kicks and jumping techniques, which look spectacular in the competition arena.
Under the tutelage of Global Tae Kwon-Do International Chief Umpire Paresh Bhadeshia, the trainee Umpires and Referees are learning how to manage the competition rings and how to score the competitors in both modern free sparring and traditional Tae Kwon-Do routines known as patterns. Following the course each trainee must put in a number of days of practical work at national competitions before gaining fully qualified status.
Liam Broderick, GTI South-West Regional Co-ordinator states, 'we're delighted that so many of our Cornish black belts are working towards becoming Tae Kwon-Do Umpires and Referees and thank Mr Bhadeshia for coming to Cornwall to host this course. Tae Kwon-Do competitions are great fun and these new Umpires and Referees will make many new friends as they take on their new duties. Good luck to them all!'.
